چکیده

INTRODUCTION Salmonella and Shigella are members of the Enterobacteriaceae family and are non-lactose fermenting (NLF) Gram-negative bacilli causing gastrointestinal illness in humans and are primarily acquired through ingestion of contaminated food and water (1). Salmonella can cause enteritis or enteric fever and the severity of disease depends on the inoculating dose, serotype and predisposing host factors (1,2). Shigella causes dysentery where symptoms include fever, abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhoea and haemolytic uremic syndrome, the most serious complication of shigellosis (2).

Background and Aim: Salmonellosis is a gastroenteritis caused by different serotypes of Salmonella and is the most common type of food poisoning in the world. The purpose of this research study is to optimize the conventional method for the isolation of Salmonella SPP from the diarrheic specimens of children. Materials and Methods: Stool specimens were obtained from one hundred patients admitt...

Isolation of Shigellae. 8. Comparison of xylose lysine deoxycholate agar, hektoen enteric agar, Salmonella-Shigella agar, and eosin methylene blue agar with stool specimens.

Two enrichment broths and four plating media were compared for efficiency of detection of enteric pathogens from 1,597 stool specimens. Of 170 salmonellae isolated from the composite of all methods, direct streaking yielded but 54%, whereas enrichment in gram-negative broth found 87% and Selenite-F broth 97%. By contrast, gram-negative broth produced 100% of the 17 shigellae, Selenite-F broth b...

Further study of strontium selenite and selenite F broths for the isolation of Salmonella typhi.

The efficiency of strontium selenite and selenite F broths in the isolation of S. typhi from 625 clinical stool specimens were compared. A total of 126 strains of S. typhi were detected. Of these, 96 (76%) were isolated with selenite F broth and 118 (94%) were isolated with strontium selenite broth. At the same time, the number of false positive isolates accruing to strontium selenite broth was...

Comparison of Six Culture Methods for Salmonella Isolation from Poultry Fecal Samples

Abstract Background and Objective: Salmonellosis is one of the most important food-borne bacterial zoonotic diseases worldwide, and poultry and its products are the major sources for salmonella transmission to human. Isolation of Salmonellaenterica from poultry needs bacteriologic enrichment and selected cultures of fecal samples. In this study, different culture methods for the isolation of s...

Recovery of Salmonella by using selenite brilliant green sulfa enrichment broth.

The efficacy and sensitivity of selenite brilliant green sulfa enrichment (SBG) broth for the isolation of Salmonella from fecal specimens were evaluated by using both clinical and artificially infected (artificial) fecal specimens. An examination of 1,588 clinical fecal specimens found Salmonella in 296 specimens, including 89 cases detected by the direct-plating xylose-lysine-desoxycholate me...
